Arrival Information
Designated Arrival Date
Please see the chart below for the designated arrival date for your semester of entry. This date serves as the official move-in date for the TUJ dorms and TUJ homestay program. This date is also the only day TUJ staff will be available to assist students with their arrival to Japan which includes escorting students to the dorms. Students arriving on any other day will need to make their own arrangements to get to the dorms. Please be careful when you book your flight - you need to ARRIVE in Japan on the designated day which means from some parts of the world you may need to leave a day earlier.
*A note to students on TUJ sponsored visas - The Japanese Embassy does not recommend that students buy an airplane ticket before receiving a visa. However, if you wish to book your flight early, we recommend that you buy a ticket that has a flexible change/cancellation policy.
Arrival Dates for Japan Admit (JA) Students
* If you are a Study Abroad (SA) student, please follow the arrival information provided by Temple main campus.

Arrival Instructions
For JA Students from Overseas
Directions from Narita Airport to Tokyo
Many of you will be arriving into Narita Airport, which is outside of Tokyo, in Chiba Prefecture. From the airport, you will take a bus to a central Tokyo hotel, where you will be greeted by a TUJ representative who will support you in getting to your TUJ-arranged housing. Those not in TUJ-arranged housing should go directly to your housing after exchanging money at the airport. The TUJ representative is only available to assist students who arrive on the official designated arrival date (shown above). Students arriving on any other day will need to make their own arrangements to get to the dorms.
Arrival Procedures
- Immigration: As you arrive at Narita, you will immediately be directed to the immigration area, and will need to go through passport control, which includes electronically providing fingerprints and facial photographs (unless you hold a Japanese passport or meet other exemption criteria), before exiting to pick up your luggage. More information on passport control when entering Japan can be found here : http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/keiziban/happyou/pdf/poster-english.pdf
- Currency Exchange: After picking up your luggage (use a luggage cart) and clearing customs, you will exit into a large lobby. Next to the exit from customs, there is a foreign exchange booth where you can convert foreign currency into Japanese yen.
- Transportation Ticket: For transportation into Tokyo, purchase a Limousine Bus ticket for ¥3,000. The counter where you purchase this ticket is located directly across from the customs exit (the staff speaks English). You can see bus schedules and additional information on the Limousine Bus website here. The hotel you need to buy your ticket for is determined by your housing assignment. This information will be sent to you via email after we allocate your housing assignment.
A note regarding the trains: There are trains from the airport into Tokyo, however, the arrival locations are not readily accessible to university housing and TUJ staff will not be available to assist you at the train station. - Bus Departure: The bus departure stands are just outside the terminal building, and the number of your bus stand will be printed on your ticket. Go to that bus stand and wait for your bus to come (buses come every few minutes and they will be exactly on schedule). Just before your bus is about to arrive, put your suitcases on the ground and get a luggage claim ticket from the staff. Line up with the other passengers and board the bus when it arrives. (Should you miss your scheduled bus departure, you may return to the ticket counter and get another ticket for a later bus.)
- Hotel Arrival: Depending on traffic, the trip will take 1-2 hours. When the bus gets to central Tokyo, it may stop at several other hotels before getting to your destination. When you get to the hotel, get off the bus, claim your baggage, and then look for the TUJ representative; he or she will be in the hotel lobby holding a Temple pennant. Please check in with the TUJ representative before going to your housing.
- Housing Arrival and Check-in: A TUJ representative will assist you in getting to your assigned housing by taxi. The taxi fare costs approximately ¥2,000 - ¥3,500 and the fare is the responsibility of the student. Make sure you have yen available which you may get at the currency exchange at the airport. The dorm managers will meet you at the dorm and check you in.
