Housing Options - Dorms and Homestays

All new students receiving visa sponsorship from TUJ are required to stay in housing arranged by the university during their first semester in Japan. Japanese students and students who do not require a visa may also use TUJ housing. Housing options include staying in a dorm or living with a Japanese family on TUJ's homestay program. TUJ dorm facilities offer a room only and do not offer a meal plan. There is either a shared kitchen or kitchenette in your room to prepare your own meals.

The primary residential facility for long-term degree seeking students is the Ontakesan Dorm. When the Ontakesan facility reaches capacity, we use the Takadanobaba Dorm for overflow housing. Short-term Study Abroad students attending TUJ through Temple University's Study Abroad Program are assigned to TUJ House, the Takadanobaba Dorm, and the Akasaka Dorm.

Homestay

TUJ offers a limited number of homestays for international students with Japanese families. This is a good option for students who wish to become more immersed in Japanese culture and language. Students in homestays will be provided two meals a day and will have a private room. In order to make the best of this experience, students will be expected to adjust to the host family's living arrangement, "live locally," eat a Japanese diet with the host family, participate in Japanese family life, and spend meaningful time with the family. Preference for selection will be given to students who demonstrate cultural sensitivity, flexibility, and a genuine interest and commitment to Japanese culture by speaking Japanese (or be willing to learn, if a beginner) and abiding by Japanese values and customs.
