External Scholarship Opportunities
A variety of scholarships, fellowships and grants are available for students planning to study in Japan. Contact each organization to establish your eligibility, and be aware of deadlines and application requirements.
US-Japan Bridging Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan
Deadline: October (for spring study) and April (for fall study)
Criteria: U.S. citizens or permanent resident enrolled as an undergraduate at a U.S. university.
Amount: $2,500 for one semester or $4,000 for academic year
Morgan-Stanley Scholarships for Study in Japan
Deadline: April (for academic year beginning fall)
Criteria: U.S. citizens; juniors and seniors at U.S. universities with an interest in economics and international finance who have been accepted for study in Japan.
Award: $7,500
The Gen Foundation
Deadline: March
Criteria: Candidates based in or studying in the UK or Japan (applicants from other countries may be considered). Focuses on biological, chemical, and botanical science students/researchers, and exceptional candidates from language, music, and art.
Award: approx. £3,000
Fellowship: Advanced Social Science Research on Japan
Deadline: May
Criteria: U.S. citizens who have completed a degree-granting program (applicants who have satisfied all the requirements for a degree and are awaiting conferral may apply). The fellowship supports research on the modern Japanese political economy, international relations, and society, and on U.S.-Japan relations.
Award: Stipend of $4,200 per month for uninterrupted periods lasting from six to twelve months.

Various scholarships and deadlines; check with your local Rotary club.
Hashi.org Travel Scholarship
Deadline: June 15 (for Japanese students) August 15 (for American students), October 15 (for Korean students)
Criteria: U.S., Japanese or Korean students interested in cultural exchange programs in the U.S., Japan or Korea.
Award: $1,000
For Short-Term Study Abroad Students Only
The following are available for short-term study abroad students only (degree-seeking students at TUJ are not eligible)
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Deadline: April (for fall study), October (for spring study)
Criteria: U.S. citizens receiving the federal Pell Grant participating in a fall, spring or academic year study abroad program (no summer-only students)
Award: Up to $5,000
Boren Scholarships
Deadline: February
Criteria: U.S. citizens studying in geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.
Award: Up to $10,000 for one semester or $20,000 for academic year
