Placement Tests

Placement tests evaluate the English, Mathematics, and Japanese skills of incoming students.

The results of the tests will be used in conjunction with study completed at your home university for advisory purposes, to determine the course appropriate to your level of proficiency. Please be sure to prepare for these tests as they will determine your placement in TUJ courses.

Who Must Take the Placement Tests?

Students who do not intend to obtain a degree from Temple University are still required to take an appropriate placement test in the following cases.

  • Students taking a writing course (e.g., college composition, writing intensive courses), a mathematics/statistics course, and/or Japanese language course.
  • Students taking an upper level course (courses with the number of 2000 or higher) without completing the college composition course, are required to take the English placement test.
Note:
Please contact the Academic Advising Center (AAC) (aac@tuj.ac.jp) if you are not certain if a placement test is required.
