An introduction to the elements of music and the evolution of musical styles in representative masterpieces, from early music to the contemporary periods. The course is intended to broaden students' knowledge of music and to enhance listening enjoyment. Note, this is a course for nonmusic majors.

A study of the trends in American music from the Pilgrims to the present. Note, although designed for nonmusic majors, this course is open to music majors.



Music Studies 2113 (formerly 0132): History of Pop
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

A review of popular song styles of the twentieth century. Contemporary songs are introduced from a variety of idioms: folk, musicals, pop groups, rock groups, film, etc. The course involves historical analysis and detailed listening.



Music Studies 2733 (formerly 0133): American Musical Theater
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

A look at the changing forms and styles of the musical theater in America from the nineteenth-century extravaganza to contemporary Sweeney Todd. Emphasizes such significant Broadway shows as Show Boat, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story and the contributions of composers, lyricists, and other artists responsible for the success of those shows.



Music Studies 2114 (formerly 0138): History of Jazz
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

A musical and historical survey of jazz, starting with the earliest important evolutionary sequence in Africa, including historical, political, and socioeconomic influences. Musical development is related to history, with all of its ramifications-listening, analysis, and criticism.
