Mathematics 0701 (formerly 0045): Elementary Algebra
3 credit hours
A course for students without adequate mathematical background who need preparation for Mathematics 1011. This is a lecture course in which each student must keep pace with the class. A problem-oriented course, it covers the major topics of a first course in algebra: signed numbers, first-degree equations and inequalities, operations with polynomials and rational functions, lines, quadratic equations, and systems of linear equations. Note, this was formerly Mathematics 0003 at TUJ. This course may not be withdrawn from unless the student withdraws from all semester coursework.
Mathematics 1011 (formerly C055): College Mathematics
3 credit hours
Prerequisite: Appropriate mathematics placement test results or Mathematics 0701
A mathematical concepts and applications course for the nonspecialist. Selected topics are from areas such as linear programming, management science, counting techniques, probability, and statistics.
Mathematics 1012 (formerly C065): Elements of Mathematical Thought
3 credit hours
Prerequisite: Mathematics 1011
A course in contemporary mathematical applications for the nonspecialist. Deals with the general areas of social choice, size, and shape. Specific topics include voting systems, fair division and apportionment, game theory, growth and form, size of populations, measurement, and geometric patterns.
Mathematics 1013 (formerly C067): Elements of Statistics
3 credit hours
Prerequisite: Mathematics 1011
A firm foundation for the study of statistics in other fields. Although no one field is emphasized to the exclusion of others, applications are drawn from psychology, political science, exercise science, and other areas.
Mathematics 1031 (formerly C077): Basic Concepts of Calculus
4 credit hours
Prerequisite: Mathematics Placement Examination or grade of C or better in Mathematics C073 or its equivalent
A calculus course in the reform style that will introduce students to the basic concepts of differential and integral calculus. The emphasis of the course will be on understanding the concepts (intuitively rather than rigorously) and on developing analytic ability. However, the course will also cover techniques of differentiation and some techniques of integration.
