Journalism 1196 (formerly 0150/1112): Writing for Journalism (formerly Writing for Mass Media)
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

Prerequisite: English 1012 or equivalent

Corequisite: Jour 1112

Notes: Departmental core course. This course is the prerequisite for all departmental writing courses. A grade of C or higher is required in order to take upper-level Journalism courses. Prior Title: Writing for Mass Media

Introduction to and practice in writing stories for various mass media such as newspapers, magazines, broadcast, public relations, and advertising. Accuracy, effective writing, and language skills. Note, this was formerly JPRA 0150.



Journalism 2396 (formerly W231): Magazine Article Writing
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

Prerequisite: Jour 1111/JPRA C055, Jour 1101/JPRA 0051, and Jour 1112/JPRA 0150, or permission of instructor

Writing, analyzing, and marketing factual articles for general and specialized magazines. Subject research, investigation of editorial needs, ethical and legal problems, and manuscript preparation. Note, this was formerly JPRA W231.



Journalism 0282: Business and Economic Reporting
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

Prerequisite: Jour 1111/JPRA C055, Jour 1101/JPRA 0051, and Jour 1112/JPRA 0150, or permission of instructor

A course encompassing discussion, research, and analysis of issues of current interest and importance in journalism, public relations, and advertising areas. Examples of topics include coverage of elections by news and advertising, First Amendment issues, and media and the courts. Note, this was formerly JPRA 0282.



Journalism 3701 (formerly 0300): Contemporary Media Issues
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

Prerequisite: Jour 1111/JPRA C055, Jour 1101/JPRA 0051, and Jour 1112/JPRA 0150, or permission of instructor

Journalism 3705 (formerly 0352): Gender and American Mass Media
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

(Cross-Listings: American Studies 3061 & History 1007)

An exploration of the role of gender in media reception and media practice. While it focuses primarily on cultural and professional notions about women's roles in American society, this course also considers masculine stereotypes in the media world. The course examines the history and current practice of various media, including newspapers, magazines, broadcast news and entertainment shows, advertising, on-line media, film, and music. Note, this was formerly JPRA 0352.



Journalism 3196 (formerly W382): Journalism and the Law
3 credit hours (non-CLA)

Prerequisite: Jour 1111/JPRA C055, Jour 1101/JPRA 0051, and Jour 1112/JPRA 0150, Political Science C051, and junior or senior status, or permission of instructor

Ethical and legal problems of media, including libel, privacy, contempt, obscenity, access to information, free press/fair trial, antitrust law, and special restraints on broadcasting and advertising. Note: Departmental advanced core course. Note, this was formerly JPRA W382.
