Intellectual Heritage


Intellectual Heritage 1196 (formerly X051): Intellectual Heritage I
3 credit hours

Prerequisite: English 1002 or equivalent

A first course in a required two-course interdisciplinary sequence, this is a close reading and discussion of a common syllabus of selected major texts reflecting Western civilization's heritage, values, and shaping of ideas. Texts are drawn from literature, philosophy, religion, and science. Ancient canonical texts include Greek tragedy; Plato; Hebrew, Christian, and Islamic sacred texts; Shakespeare and Renaissance thought; and Galileo and the Copernican revolution. Some non-Western texts are introduced for comparative analysis.



Intellectual Heritage 1297 (formerly X052): Intellectual Heritage II
3 credit hours

Prerequisite: IH 1196

A second course in the IH sequence, this is a study of Locke and rational politics; romanticism and romantic poets; Marxism; Freud; modern scientific thought, including Darwin and Einstein; literary modernism; and Western materialism.



Intellectual Heritage 1061 (formerly 0061): Intellectual Heritage I Lab
1 credit hours

Corequisite: IH 1196

An intensive series of guided reading exercises for the assigned texts of Intellectual Heritage I. Emphasis is on comprehending important ideas contained in the texts through self-paced reading and comparison with paraphrased versions. The course includes a discussion of ideas for essay assignments and an opportunity to draft and redraft with advice from the lab instructor before submitting essays to the IH instructor. The course offers focused preparation for IH examinations.



Intellectual Heritage 1062 (formerly 0062): Intellectual Heritage II Lab
1 credit hours

Corequisite: IH 1297
