An introductory course in media arts and theory that examines the history and practice of image making, sound production, and new technologies. Students will explore hands-on production processes and the theoretical foundations of film, video, and audio in a range of technologies, including low-tech, professional studio, and computerized digital formats. Course work will emphasize individual students' rigorous exploration of creative, personal visions, along with commercial applications.

A continuation of media arts and theory with an increased emphasis on aesthetics, genres, writing, and project design. Assigned production projects and readings will include documentary, financial, and experimental formats.

An analysis of film and television through screenings and readings in the context of theory, history, and aesthetics. Note, this was formerly RTF X155.

A second-semester editing course that serves as an introduction to the use of computers in the editing process. The course provides a background in digital editing from CMX for TV broadcast to current desktop editing for independent film and video makers. Includes Quicktime, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator, DVD Studio Pro.
Film and Media Arts 2671 (formerly 0263): International Cinema

A survey of the history of motion pictures from the perspective of many different aesthetic concepts. Lectures and screenings examine Hollywood style and a variety of historical and cultural alternatives, including the Soviet school of montage, Italian neorealism, postwar Japanese cinema, the French new wave, and many other commercial and artistic currents from different periods and visual cultures.

An intensive analysis of some of Akira Kurosawa's major works. The course includes screenings of the newest DVD release versions of these films, with documentary, interviews, and analytical additions, supplemented by in-class discussion of the films and their accompanying shot-by-shot analyses. Course requirements include a term paper and a weekly journal.

An advanced course concentrating on the preparation of a complete television, motion picture, or nonfiction script.
Film and Media Arts 3452 (formerly 0354): New Technologies Lab

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
A course that invites the exploration, study, design, production, and implementation of hypermedia projects, including interactive and computer-controlled video, computer graphics, digital sound, videodisc, virtual reality, and other emerging technologies. Interdisciplinary collaborations will be encouraged between film and media arts, mass media and telecommunications, computer science, engineering, architecture, art, and music.
Film and Media Arts 4673 (formerly 0366): International Cinema
4 credit hours
The course will survey and examine the various cultural determinants of international film forms through screenings, lectures, and readings. It will attempt to define the differences and similarities between mainstream Hollywood cinema and the range of international film forms from Africa, Latin America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

An exploratory seminar with varying special topics. The course may be repeated if the topic differs. Expectations include lectures, screenings, discussions, and written assignments. Note, this was formerly RTF 0302.
Film and Media Arts 4240 (formerly 0393): Topics in Production
4 credit hours (non-CLA)
Prerequisite: Permission of instructor
A workshop in film, video, audio, or emerging new production issue. A new aesthetic approach or aspect of technology is featured each time the course is offered. This includes such special effects as field recording, audio experimentation, computer imagery, video verite, and film/video diary.
