University Requirements: Core Curriculum
Undergraduate University Requirements
Undergraduate students at Temple University must meet three levels of requirements as part of their program of study. These levels are imposed by the university, by the college or school, and by the academic major.
The university requirements are explained below. Requirements for each college and school and for each academic major can be found in Major / Minor Requirements section.
Suffice to say here that each of Temple University's various colleges and schools (the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Communications and Theater, for example) has its own rules and requirements. Moreover, individual departments within the colleges and schools stipulate the courses required for students to receive degrees in their majors.
University Requirements: Core Curriculum
All students at Temple University, whether studying at the main campus or the Japan campus, must complete certain core university requirements. Core requirements broaden students' skills and understanding of the world and provide the values and knowledge necessary for students to engage in the more specialized studies related to their majors.
At Temple University, there are nine categories of core requirements:
American Culture
The Arts
Composition
Individual & Society
Intellectual Heritage
Language & International Studies
Quantitative Reasoning
Science & Technology
Studies in Race
Students must take one or more courses in each of these nine core areas. In addition, they must take a number of writing-intensive courses as required for their major.
Students transferring to Temple University from other institutions must consult an adviser in the Academic Advising Center to learn which, if any, of their prior courses may satisfy one or more of the core requirements at Temple.
