Graduation Procedures
Upon completion of 80 semester hours including transfer credits, bachelor's degree candidates (40 credits for Associate's degree candidates) should request graduation review with an academic advisor from the Academic Advising Center to determine whether or not they are meeting the university, college, and major requirements for their degree.
In the graduation review appointment, students will be informed of the outstanding requirements they will have to complete in order to graduate. Students who choose not to meet an advisor will assume full responsibility for errors and absence of relevant information which may impact their graduation eligibility.
Students must submit the Application for Graduation to the Academic Advising Center by the last day of regular undergraduate courses of one prior semester to their final semester (i.e. Spring graduation candidates must submit the form by the last day of regular undergraduate courses of a Fall semester). Students can find the exact date on the academic calendar. The application deadline is always absolute, and no late application will be accepted. Before submitting the form, students must pay a Graduation Fee of 21,000 yen.
The Commencement Exercise (Graduation Ceremony) of TUJ is typically held once a year between the end of May and the middle of June. The exact date, time, and location will be posted on TUJ's website accordingly. Successful graduates in Summer and Fall and Spring graduation candidates will receive the invitation from TUJ Dean's Office.
Students must clear all outstanding balance in their tuition account and unreturned item to the Library in order to receive their diploma.
Notice to Students Who Have TUJ-Sponsored Student Visas
Students who hold a TUJ-sponsored student visa must leave Japan within the timeframe described below as soon as their graduation requirements are successfully completed.
- Students who have officially graduated from the University: 90 days after the last day of their final examination in their final semester
- Students whose graduation has not been officially processed while all requirements have been completed: 30 days after the last day of their final examination in their last semester
Students must remember that Japanese immigration requires full-time enrollment at TUJ if they wish to stay in Japan on TUJ-sponsored student visa. This policy applies to students including category (#2) above.
Students who plan to apply for a visa status change to "designated activity" (specifically for job hunting after graduation) must remember that Immigration will process the application ONLY if they have OFFICIALLY graduated from TUJ. If they complete their graduation requirements but do not submit a graduation application and therefore do not officially graduate, they will need to leave Japan within 30 days of the final examination (#2) above.
Students with questions should consult with the Visa Coordinator from the Office of Student Services (OSS).
Diploma will be shipped to students' "Diploma Mailing Address" that they are to indicate on the Application for Graduation. Students may also request transcripts or other certificates at the Registrar's Office.
Petition for Non-graduates to attend University Commencement Ceremony
Students who meet the following requirements listed below may petition for a permission to participate in commencement activities by submitting the petition form (PDF: 16KB) to the Academic Advising Center. The deadline is indicated on Spring semester academic calendar.
- Student must be within eight credit hours of meeting their degree requirements; this status must be verified by the school or college.
- Student must attach a printed roster from OWLnet with his or her name appearing on the roster to verify registration for all remaining requirements.
