TUJ Undergraduate Program Auditing Policy
Please note this policy refers ONLY to the undergraduate program. The graduate programs will have their own, much stricter, rules. The Program Directors will have the final say over auditing admissions, as TUJ Dean's designee.

Course Fees
For Currently Enrolled, Matriculated, Undergraduate Students
For Currently Enrolled, Matriculated, Undergraduate Students, we will apply main campus policy, slightly amended.
There may be circumstances under which a student will wish to audit a course, i.e., participate in the class without earning academic credit, credit hours, or grades.
The student must have written permission of the instructor and of the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) of TUJ. Students will be charged JPY 80,000 for a 3-credit course, and JPY 100,000 for a 4-credit course, plus any relevant student activity fee or facility fee and any required media fees. Standard payment procedures apply.
Change of registration from credit to audit, or from audit to credit, may be processed only during the following periods:
- before the end of the second week of the fall or spring semesters
- before the end of the third day of classes during summer sessions
For All Other Auditing Students
For currently enrolled TUJ Postgraduate Students, individuals associated with TUJ but not on credit-bearing programs (e.g. Continuing Education students, Alumni) and members of the general public the following rules shall apply:
Eligibility
- All auditing applicants must meet standard TUJ undergraduate entry requirements, including English, in order to audit an undergraduate class.
- A student currently enrolled at TUJ on a credit-bearing (undergraduate or postgraduate) program is automatically qualified to apply to audit an undergraduate course
- If an applicant has already completed a bachelor's degree, or is enrolled as a degree-seeking student at another university, this will waive all requirements EXCEPT FOR English. (If the first degree was taught with English as the medium of instruction, then the English requirement is also waived.)
- ALL applications for auditing must be reviewed by Admissions and approved the Admissions Committee by to ensure they are eligible. Admissions will then need to be forward to the Academic Advising Center (AAC) to confirm seat availability and verify any specific details with the relevant instructor.
- Where a class has pre-requisites the auditing applicant must demonstrate that he or she has met these, either through prior study, a placement test or in an interview with the instructor.
Registration Priority
Registration priority ALWAYS goes to degree-seeking students; auditing will only be possible in classes which have enrolled below their max cap.
Exclusion List
The following groups of classes cannot be audited (AAC can provide a list of course codes)
- Studio art classes
- Production classes
- Writing classes
Language classes (English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean) may only be audited with the permission of the instructor and if there is a compelling reason why they cannot be taken in Continuing Education.
Expectations and Requirements
- Auditing students are required to abide by the Temple University Code of Conduct and other relevant Temple University (TU) and TUJ polices at all times
- An auditing student may be dismissed from a class if, in the view of the instructor and the CAO, they have acted in a way which violates the TU Code of Conduct or have otherwise had a negative impact on the learning experience of full-time TUJ students
- Auditing students are expected to fully participate in any class; the specific requirements placed on an auditing student will be determined by the individual faculty/course instructor. If the faculty member requires that an auditor participate in class discussion, make presentations, and submit written work and meet attendance requirements, then these expectations must be fulfilled by the auditing student
- Auditing students will not receive a 'grade' for a class, however they can expect the instructor to offer comments on materials they submit.
Access to TUJ Facilities
Auditing students will be granted access to the TUJ library and computing facilities under the same terms and conditions as students on the Continuing Education program. Auditing students will require access to Blackboard.
