Academic Advising at TUJ
Academic Advising is a series of supportive activities provided for students to accomplish their academic and career goals through assistances such as:
- choosing an appropriate major based on their interests
- selecting appropriate courses for their program of study
- monitoring their academic progress
- informing about the University's deadlines, policies, and regulations
TUJ undergraduate students can choose from two types of advising models which correspond and cooperate each other closely.
Advising by Professional Advisors
Undergraduate students in all majors at any level can get assistance from the Academic Advising Center (AAC, located on the 1st floor of Azabu Hall) staffed with full-time professional academic advisors. Students will be ensured by the AAC advisors to satisfy all of the University's graduation requirement areas, such and the University Core/General Education, major, and college requirements. Advising is available on appointment basis throughout the semester with an exception of certain designated periods in which advising is limited, such as Graduation Review and Clearance or New Student Orientation. Appointment is typically available between 10:00 - 5:00 on Monday through Friday. In order to make an appointment, students simply can stop by the AAC. Each advising slot typically lasts for 30-40 minutes.
Advising by the AAC is also available on walk-in basis during the first two weeks of each semester. Each advising slot will last for 30 minutes. Students who wish to book a slot may do so only by stopping at the AAC. The sign-up sheet becomes available at 9:00 in the morning every day during the Walk-in advising period.

Prior to Priority Registration, typically 3-4 weeks in advance, the AAC exclusively enhances its advising activities in order to accommodate students' needs. During this period, the AAC divides all undergraduate students into a few categories and delivers advising at different timing. For more details, students should refer to the Priority Registration Information in the Students' Manuarls section.
Faculty Advising by Major Coordinators
Students can receive advising from designated faculty members who are referred as Major Coordinators. Major Coordinators are particularly responsible in advising on a respective major's requirement. While the professional advisors in the AAC are available to students throughout their academic careers, students are also recommended, and sometimes required by a particular major, to meet with the Major Coordinator in their major on regular basis. Through contact with the Major Coordinators, students gain an in-depth appreciation of a specific discipline and discover opportunities associated with their field of interest.
Some TUJ students choose to continue their studies by attending Masters or Doctorate Graduate programs of their choice. While each graduate program has their own specific admissions requirements, it is recommended that students meet with their Major Coordinator for further information and suggestions. Students should begin planning as soon as their sophomore/junior year.
Students should request an appointment with their Major Coordinator individually. Prior to Priority Registration, however, there will be a specified Major Advising period and the AAC assists them in making an appointment at that time.
Students should check Major and Program Advisors for Major Coordinators' contact information.
