Admissions (Doctoral Program)

To be admitted to the graduate program in TESOL, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  1. Demonstrate proof of having obtained a bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from accredited institutions of higher learning;
  2. Provide scores on standardized tests (the general portion of the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test) that are no lower than the fiftieth percentile and that have been taken no longer than five years prior to application. The Miller Analogies Test is offered every month at TUJ-Tokyo and TUJ-Osaka;
  3. Provide two official transcripts from the degree-granting institution(s) and from every institution of higher learning that the applicant has attended;
  4. Provide three letters of recommendation;
  5. If a non-native speaker of English, must provide a score of at least 600 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), 250 on the computer-based test, or 100 on the iBT (Internet-based test).

  • Second Summer Session 2009: June 26 - August 9

Tuition and Fees

Current tuition and fee rates (2007-8) are: In Tokyo, ¥222,000 for each three-credit course, ¥74,000 for each one-credit course. In Osaka, ¥213,000 for each three-credit course, ¥71,000 for each one-credit course. These figures include the 5% National Consumption Tax as required by law. Tuition and fees are subject to change; typical tuition increases in the past have been 2-3% per year.

  • Matriculation Fee: ¥30,000
  • ID Fee for new students: ¥11,000
  • Dissertation Binding and Processing Fee: $183
  • Graduation Fee: ¥21,000

Application Deadlines

Applications for the doctoral program at Temple University Japan should be submitted to the Graduate Office in Tokyo on or before Monday, June 2, 2008. Applicants will be notified of selection results on Friday, July 4. If an appropriate number of qualified candidates applies, doctoral courses will begin on Friday, September 5, 2008.
