Eng Ed 8657 (Distinguished Lecturer Series - Seminar 3): Reflective Practice for Language Teachers
1 credit hour
Reflective Practice generally refers to teachers learning to subject their own beliefs about teaching and learning to a critical analysis, and, thus, to take more responsibility for their actions in the classroom. Reflective Practice frees teachers from impulsive and routine activity and enables them to act in a more deliberate and intentional manner.
Experience as a teacher is not enough, for we do not learn from experience as much as we learn from reflecting on that experience; experience combined with reflections leads to growth and this is how we become more effective teachers. Participants in the workshop will undergo a reflective analysis of their own practice by examining their beliefs, values, and principles of teaching and learning.
The workshop will cover three main topics: 1) Defining Reflective Practice, 2) Reflective Practice in Action (Analyzing Classroom Communication and Ten Attributes of Effective Teaching), and 3) Practicing What We Preach (Investigating Evidence of Student Learning: Concept Maps; and Applications: Ten Activities for Professional Development).
