Test Requirements

For Native Speaker of English

GRE (The Graduation Record Examination)
The GRE is a standardized test of verbal, quantitative, and analytical abilities that is widely used as a graduate admission requirement by American universities. The GRE, or the alternative Miller Analogies Test (MAT), is required of every applicant who is a native-speaker of English. TUJ requires only the GRE General Test, not the Subject Test in Education.

For more information about the GRE, please visit their website at http://www.ets.org/gre/.

MAT (The Miller Analogies Test)
The MAT is a standardized, 60-minute test of verbal skills that is often used as an alternative to the GRE for admission to graduate programs in North American universities. A study booklet on how to prepare for the MAT is available in the Graduate College of Education Office at all TUJ centers. The MAT is given regularly at TUJ.

A study booklet on how to prepare for the Miller Analogies Test is available in the Graduate Office at both the Tokyo and Osaka centers. The Miller Analogies Test is given regularly at TUJ. Please contact us for further information.

Note:
the Miller Analogies Test is often abbreviated MAT, but should not to be confused with the GMAT, which is a test for admission to MBA schools.

For Non-native Speaker of English

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
The TOEFL is a widely used standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native speakers of English. A TOEFL score is a good indication of your English language proficiency; and since all lectures and texts at Temple are in English, it is not wise to begin taking courses until you are confident of your English ability.

A TOEFL score of 90 (Internet-based test), or 575 (paper-based test) is required for matriculation. If your score is slightly below the minimum required, and if you are confident that you will be able to earn the required score soon, then you may take a course as a non-matriculated student. The Program Director, Assistant Director, or a graduate faculty member will be able to help you make that decision. To be acceptable in support of an application for matriculation, a TOEFL score can be no more than two years old.

The paper-based TOEFL is given several times a year at TUJ. For further information about the TOEFL given at TUJ, contact the Graduate College of Education Office. For general information about the TOEFL, please visit the ETS(Educational Testing Service) website at http://www.ets.org/toefl/.
