"International Perspectives on Motivation for Second Language Learning"
The study of motivation has been strongly influenced by Gardner's socio-educational model of second language learning. At the heart of the model is the integrative motive, reflecting the desire to learn a language in order to communicate, and possibly even identify, with members of the group who speak it. Integrative motivation is often contrasted with instrumental motives which represent the desire to learn a language for practical gains (e.g., financial rewards). In the mid-1990's the socio-educational model was criticized for being too dominant in the field and for not considering classroom processes; calls were made to open the research agenda on motivation. In reviewing both the critique and the responses that have emerged in the literature to date, developments in the motivational models of Gardner, Clement, Dornyei, Ushioda, and Yashima will be highlighted. We will conclude by considering two issues: what do these developments mean for the study of motivation, and are the "new" approaches more applicable to the language classroom?
