Wataru obtained his bachelor's degree in Applied Behavioral Science at Pennsylvania State University in 1997 and master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania in 2000. The client must be "willing and wanting" to change, and the therapist's role is to guide and encourage their potential to regain serenity in their lives.
Wataru also taught a "Multicultural Counseling" class for the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University as an adjunct professor for two years prior to his return to Japan in 2007. In addition, he practices Chinese martial art for over 13 years and has a 2nd degree black belt.
