About the Event

Taiwan (ROC) will hold presidential elections on March 22. The elections will mark the end of the presidency of Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party. With both main presidential candidates promising to improve Taiwan's relationship with the People's Republic of China, and following on from the victory of the KMT in legislative elections in January, the presidential election may result in important changes in Taiwan's regional and international role as well as new directions in its domestic politics.

Temple University, Japan Campus will host leading experts on Taiwan to discuss the outcome of the election and its implications. The group will have spent the previous week in Taiwan, visiting the headquarters of the major parties, meeting with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mainland Affairs Council and other government offices, and acting as observers of the Central Election Commission on election day.
