About the Event

In the winter of 1998, Yoshiko Tanaka-Shichinohe, then a Fulbright Scholar at Johns Hopkins SAIS in Washington and an official of the Japan Defense Agency (now MOD), brought together eight Korean and Japanese for a dinner on Korea-Japan relations who met at Bua Restaurant in DuPont Circle in the US capital. In the past ten years, thanks to Yoshiko's dynamism and vision, KJ has flourished on two continents. Upon her return to Tokyo in 1998, she established a Tokyo branch, which met for several years at the US embassy thanks to the hospitality of Dr. and Mrs. Kent Calder. Today, we hold sessions in Tokyo, Washington, and New York City.

To celebrate its first decade, the Korea Japan Group is organizing a meeting in Sapporo, Yoshiko's hometown to which she returned in 2002. Hokkaido University, from which she graduated, has kindly agreed to host us.

The event will take place on Saturday 8 March 2008 at the Gakujutsu Koryu Kaikan near the university's main gate. We will start with a lunch and then hold our discussion in the afternoon. The conference's theme will be "Asian security and Hokkaido", Japanese and English will be the working languages. For this event, as in the past, we intend to uphold the K-J hallmarks of serious discussion and good cheer.

We will contact you later after we select a location for the luncheon. In the meantime, please let us know if you might be attending. Also, do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to suggest that we include friends or colleagues of yours in Hokkaido.
