American Law School in Japan
Temple Law School is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA), and its Tokyo campus operates year-round on a trimester basis. Students may complete the majority or all of their legal studies in Japan. All courses are taught in English during the evening hours. Temple is a public institution based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1895, Temple Law School presently educates over 1,200 Juris Doctor (J.D.) students and 150 Masters of Law (LL.M.) students.
Top Ranked U.S. Law School
Temple Law School is highly regarded and consistently ranked among the top U.S. law schools in many areas, including trial advocacy, legal research and writing, and part-time programs. In 2009, U.S. News & World Report rated Temple's trial advocacy program No. 2 among all U.S. law schools. In fact, Temple's Trial Advocacy program has been ranked in the top 3 among all U.S. law schools for the past decade. Also in 2009, Temple Law School was ranked No. 7 among all U.S. law schools for both its Legal Research & Writing program as well as for its part-time program which permits students to take evening classes after their work day.
Degrees, Certificates, and Specialized Training
Opportunities at our Tokyo campus abound. You can study towards an LL.M. degree for International Law Graduates ("General LL.M.") or LL.M. degree in Transnational Law. Other students are attracted to our Certificate of International Law or Certificate of American Legal Studies, or simply wish to take a course as an audit student. Also, J.D. students at any U.S. law school may enhance their international law education by participating in our spring semester program during their second or third years.
Convenience and Flexibility
Temple offers convenient evening classes year round making it possible to work during the day and study at night. With our flexible schedule, Temple students can study at their own pace. An LL.M. degree may take as little as 9 months to complete or may be spread out over 4 years. Similarly, a certificate may take between 4 months and 3 years to complete. The certificate programs and the Transnational LL.M. can be earned completely in Japan. The General LL.M. maybe started in Japan, but requires legal study at our campuses in Philadelphia or Rome.
Recognition of Excellence
In 2005, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) officially recognized Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) and its excellence as an academic institution. TUJ is the first postsecondary educational institution in Japan with overseas roots to receive the Foreign University, Japan Campus designation. This designation enables Temple students to take advantage of benefits available to university students such as discount train commuter passes, student visas, and credit recognition at Japanese universities.
