One cannot expect to tame the dragon without understanding the fundamentals of Chinese contract law and the role of attorneys in China. Unlike many international business centers which have well established legal precedents for the interpretation and enforcement of contracts and long standing systems for legal education and professional licensing of their attorneys, many Chinese legal principals and the legal profession itself are still going through adolescence. Many business persons and lawyers go to China without fully appreciating the impact that these relatively new principals of Chinese contract law, how contracts are drafted and the role of attorneys in China will have on their ability to achieve their primary business goals on the timetable dictated by senior management. So that we can be better prepared and better manage expectations when doing deals in China and so that we can simply better understand the differences in our legal systems and legal cultures, Professor Yeh will provide us with an overview of Chinese contract law and the role of attorneys in China. He will also share with us interesting factors to consider when trying to negotiate deals in China. There also will be time during the Q&A session for attendees to ask Professor Yeh questions.
FWLA meetings are open to the public. Guests and new members are always welcome to attend our meetings so please invite your friends and colleagues—men and women—to attend this exciting presentation! Guests do not need to accompany a member.
