Event Overview

Japan is midstream in the most fundamental and comprehensive reform to its justice system since its present Constitution took effect in 1947. Professor Foote, one of the first Americans to hold a fully-tenured position in the law faculty of a national university in Japan during the postwar period, has been deeply involved in the reforms, particularly with respect to legal education. He has served on the Expert Consultation Group on the Legal Training System, Headquarters for the Promotion of Justice System Reform and other committees charged with advising on rules to govern accreditation, curriculum and other features of Japan's law schools of the future.

Professor Foote will share his observations on the objectives of the reforms, the reform process and the results we can expect. The new law schools will open their doors in 2004 and other reforms will be phased in over the next several years.
