Event Overview

The speech Professor Terry Halbert will give is based on her abiding interest in the U.S. tobacco industry and will be accompanied by a series of colorful illustrations. Professor Halbert has developed industry-specific courses on the tobacco industry and on gambling, in which students look at those industries from multiple perspectives, including: history, political science, psychology, law, ethics, economics, sociology, literature and film. This is a unique opportunity to gain insights and consider about the timely issue of smoking.

Her speech will provide a historical context of smoking with emphasis on:

  • The development of the industry as a powerful oligopoly by the early 20th century.
  • How early advertising made cigarettes synonymous with glamour and rebellion, an irresistible emblem of modernity.
  • The crisis the tobacco industry faced as bad news about the health consequences of smoking began to emerge. Explanation of how the industry managed that crisis, and how the political, legal and cultural landscape that had benefited it for so long began to shift.
  • Summarizing how the tobacco industry has recently morphed into an even more influential force in global terms while under siege in the U.S.A.
