TUJ Intern Success Story at the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo

Chikana Kigami ’13 School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

“I interned at the Gourmet Shop in the Food and Beverage Division. I must say that the three months I spent at the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo was one of the best times of my life. The experience not only taught me what hospitality truly is, but also the importance of finding somewhere one can belong. As an intern, my responsibilities were not always thrilling. I have spent whole days in the storehouse counting the stock and packing products. Even in that situation, there was always someone watching and encouraging me. It was motivating to me to know that what I did was recognized and appreciated. People at the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo are great.

At Temple University, Japan Campus I have not only learned professional English skills, but have also had the experience of understanding people from different cultures and backgrounds. I think this a unique and valuable part of all TUJ students’ experience. My ability to speak English helped me so many times while I was working at the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo. Also, I was responsible for creating a hygiene manual in English and submitted it to Food and Beverage Manager.”

Yoichiro Yoda '95 Art Exhibit at Mitaka City Gallery

Yoichiro Yoda, ’95 BFA Tyler School of Art at Main Campus. Born in Takamatsu, Japan and moved to New York at the age of three months. After graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art, Yoda decided to attend the Tyler School of Art after seeing the quality of student work on a campus visit.

“I am very happy that I went to Tyler. It was some of the best years of my life.

It was also while I was at Tyler that I found my biggest subject matter for my work, the theatres of 42nd Street. One morning in the winter of 1993, I went on a bus trip from Tyler to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. When we got to NYC, the bus driver made a mistake and drove past 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. When I looked through the tinted window of the bus, I saw an old crumbling window of a theatre. I remembered the old theatres on that block.

I bought a book called Lost Broadway Theatres by Nicholas Van Hoogstraten and began researching them. I went back to 42nd Street and compared the old photos in the book with the actual theatres. Then a strange thing happened. I felt as if I had finally come back to my true home.

It was then that I started my theatre painting series, as well as my documentary video project called "Last Days of 42nd Street".”

Currently, Yoda has two shows in Tokyo: "Dramas of Memory" at the Mitaka City Gallery of Art, and a solo show, "Breakfast is Important" at the Nantenshi Gallery near Kyobashi.
