Announcement:

The Goldman Sachs Mochida Scholars Fund launched

TUJ is proud to announce a new four-year, full scholarship program supported by Goldman Sachs Gives, a donor-advised fund. The Goldman Sachs Mochida Scholars Fund, named after Mr. Masanori Mochida, President of Goldman Sachs Japan Co., Ltd. who recommended the gift to Goldman Sachs Gives, will support academically successful but financially challenged Japanese students. Eligible applicants include those who wish to enroll during the two academic years starting from the Fall 2011 semester through Summer 2013. Applicants must satisfy all admission qualifications, including academic performance and English proficiency. Once admitted, each recipient will receive scholarships equivalent to four years' tuition for up to 126 credits, depending on the major. Each scholarship is worth about 5.7 million yen in total. Approximately 80% of the amount will be funded by Goldman Sachs Gives and the remaining 20% by TUJ. The expected number of scholarship recipients for the first academic year is five.

News:

Temple University, Japan Campus 2011 Commencement

146 out of 276 graduating students from the TUJ class of 2011, from the undergraduate and graduate programs, gathered at the commencement ceremony conducted on June 5 at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel, in Tokyo. This year's commencement held special meaning for many at TUJ given the impact of the March earthquake. Addressing the graduating students, Temple University President Ann Weaver Hart told the audience to remember their experience of the earthquake, "because it will shape you and help you shape your thoughts about the future." A complete video and pictures from the commencement ceremony can be viewed here.

3rd Annual TUJ Diamond Club Dinner

June 4, 2011, marked the completion of the third successful year of the TUJ Diamond Club. Nearly 60 people, including alumni, parents, friends and members of the TUJ Board of Overseers, gathered at Tokyo Kaikan for a night hard to forget. The night ended with a live Taiko show from Taiko Lab Aoyama. Proceeds from the TUJ Diamond Club Dinner will go to support the TUJ scholarship funds for new and continuing students and also to the TUJ Relief Fund to help students who have been affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. The dinner raised enough funds to support the cause and will allow the scholarship recipient to continue their education at TUJ.

First live-video ICAS lecture success

On May 27, TUJ's ICAS hosted a lecture given by Dr. Paul Scalise, ICAS Adjunct Fellow, on Japan's national energy policy and the current situation surrounding TEPCO. Dr. Scalise is a renowned expert in the Japanese electricity market and serves as Contributing Analyst to Oxford Analytica and the Economist Intelligence Unit. The lecture was delivered for the first time via an online conferencing system, connecting Dr. Scalise at Temple University's main campus in Philadelphia to the audience at the Tokyo campus. This first live-video lecture was a great success and drew over 50 participants. The recorded lecture is available on YouTube .
