New Temple President Elected

On May 4, Ann Weaver Hart, the president of the University of New Hampshire, was elected the ninth president of Temple University by its Board of Trustees. She will be Temple's first female president and will assume leadership of the university in July.


TUJ Appointed Merill Lynch as the Financial Manager for the New Campus Project

TUJ appointed Merrill Lynch Japan Securities Co., Ltd. as its financial advisor on the new campus project (Temple Educational Center). The center is slated to open at the end of 2009 in central Tokyo. TUJ selected Merrill Lynch because of the firm's significant expertise in real-estate finance, comprehensive financial advice and services, and long history in Japan. The company also brings great understanding and commitment to realizing this groundbreaking venture.

Merrill Lynch will be assisting TUJ on several aspects of the project, including analyzing financial assumptions and projections, advising the university about optimal financing schemes and development structures, and preparing related documents and applications. In addition, the firm will help arrange professional, legal, accounting, and tax advice and provide input on various aspects of project implementation.


TUJ Student Receives Finalist Prize at the 05-06 Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship Award Ceremony

TUJ student Masatoshi Kuwahara received a finalist prize for his article on baseball at the 05-06 Swadesh DeRoy Scholarship award ceremony on April 11. The annual scholarship award by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (FCCJ) was created in honor of a respected long-time journalist member of FCCJ to encourage and support university students who are interested in entering the foreign journalism field. Although Masatoshi did not receive one of the top three prizes, he was one of the two finalist prize winners. He received 50,000 yen for the prize.
