Letter to Undergraduate and AEP Students
May 18, 2009
Dear students,
This is to follow up with my message to you on May 11th regarding the H1N1 Influenza.
On May 16, the first domestic case of the H1N1 influenza was confirmed in Kobe city, about 270 miles (430 kilometers) west of Tokyo. Health officials also confirmed that the number of H1N1 influenza cases increased over the weekend to more than 100 in the Osaka and Kobe area. Osaka and Hyogo prefectural governments have closed their public junior high and high schools and some other schools for a week, and canceled community events in affected cities. There were no confirmed cases in Tokyo as of today.
TUJ will continue to operate as normal although there is some possibility that operations may be temporarily disrupted. To date, no TUJ students are known to have contracted the H1N1 virus, but there is some possibility that TUJ may either temporarily cancel certain classes or close the entire institution for approximately one week. These emergency measures will be announced via e-mail and on the TUJ website, so please monitor carefully all communications from the university.
Meanwhile, students who traveled outside of Japan and came back within seven days of their first Summer 09 class are requested to send the country name and period of the visit to contact Office of Student Services (OSS) immediately by phone at 03-5441-9800 (TUJ's general phone) or by e-mail at oss@tuj.ac.jp.
We ask all students to continue to take extra precautions. If you develop fever or other flu-like symptoms, do not come to the university but contact the nearest regional Fever Advisory Center (Hatsunetsu Soudan Center) and follow their medical guidance. If you are diagnosed as possibly infected by the H1N1 flu virus, please contact OSS immediately.
