Cancellation and Refunds for J.D. Semester Abroad Program
We may cancel the program in the unlikely event that too few students enroll. We might also cancel or terminate it should a natural disaster occur or security issues arise.
If before the program commences we cancel the program for the above reasons, or a student withdraws either because of changes in the course offerings or in other significant aspects of the program, or because the U.S. State Department issues a travel warning or alert for Tokyo covering the program dates, the student will receive, within twenty days of the cancellation or withdrawal, a full refund of all monies advanced.
If during the course of the program we cancel the program or a student withdraws either because of changes in the course offerings or in other significant aspects of the program, or because the U.S. State Department issues a travel warning or alert for Tokyo covering the program dates, we will refund the student the fees paid to Temple University (excluding room, board, and travel costs associated with getting to Japan).
If a student withdraws from the program for any other reason, we will not refund application fees and the seat deposit. We will refund tuition only if the student withdraws during the first week of classes; otherwise, tuition is nonrefundable.
In the unlikely event that we must cancel the program before it begins, we will immediately notify admitted students by phone, e-mail, mail, or in person. We will also post a cancellation notice on the Law School's website.
In the unlikely event that we must cancel the Program after students arrive in Tokyo, the administrators of the Temple Law Japan program will contact all participating students by e-mail. Should we cancel or reschedule particular courses, we will inform admitted students by e-mail or in person.
State Department Travel Advisories
Temple University Law School will supply admitted students with U.S. State Department Country Specific Information for Japan. Whenever the Department revises or updates this information, we will promptly distribute it to applicants, admitted students, or participants as appropriate.
We will also take the following steps:
In General - If the State Department issues a new or heightened warning or alert, either during the application process, after we admit students, or during the program term, we will post a notice on the Law School website, and we will immediately inform by e-mail all applicants, admitted students, or participants.
If the State Department issues a travel warning or alert for Tokyo that indicates an elevated risk above the level, if any, that existed when the student was admitted to the program or arrived in Tokyo, the student may withdraw from the program. If the program term is already underway, the student may either request a refund of fees billed by Temple University (excluding room, board, and travel costs associated with getting to Japan), or complete the semester either at Temple University Law School-Main Campus or via distance or blended learning if such arrangements are feasible.
WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE OPTIONS OF COMPLETING THE SEMESTER EITHER AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL-MAIN CAMPUS OR BY DISTANCE LEARNING. (NOTE: IF THESE ARRANGEMENTS ARE NOT FEASIBLE, A STUDENT WILL LOSE A SEMESTER' S PROGRESS TOWARD THE J.D. DEGREE.)
These options depend on resources, technology, and course and independent study opportunities at Temple University Law School. If arrangements at the Law School are not feasible, we will refund fees in accord with our general policy.
When, in spring 2011, the State Department issued a travel warning encouraging U.S. citizens to depart from Japan, we immediately informed students by e-mail, and through our websites. We gave them the options either of completing their semester remotely or in Tokyo or of withdrawing completely and receiving a refund in accord with our general policy.
