Overview of Position

Temple University Japan (TUJ) is a branch campus of Philadelphia-based Temple University and has been in Tokyo since 1982. We offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs in English to a broad mix of about 1200 Japanese and non-Japanese students. Most students are admitted directly to TUJ and complete their degrees in Tokyo. About 8-10% are study abroad students from around the world coming on a semester-long basis. We offer eight full undergraduate majors ranging from Art to Psychological Studies. Our team is international, with 35 full time faculty joined by many part-time adjunct faculty from the professions, business, and the arts. TUJ holds classes in the Fall and Spring semesters (15 weeks) and over a 10 week Summer semester.

We seek an experienced instructor of Japanese who can also contribute to TUJ's Gen Ed program. The primary role is to teach Japanese for Study Abroad students and others who are not Japanese language majors. We prioritize active and collaborative learning, and this position requires a demonstrated record of effective teaching in and outside the classroom. We are particularly interested in those who can develop co-curricular programming to support newcomers to Japan. Candidates must understand the special challenges of teaching in an international context.

The core teaching load is six courses a year, generally two in each of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters.

Other Duties

Candidates must be willing to contribute service to the University, particularly through membership on faculty committees. We expect our faculty to be active in their creative or research field outside the classroom, and/or contribute to the advancement of 'teaching and learning' in their field.

Qualifications & Experiences

  • PhD or Master's degree in a related field
  • At least three years' university-level teaching experience in an international context
  • Fluency in English
  • Familiarity with American Higher Education
