About the Event

In January each year, the political risk advisory and consultancy firm Eurasia Group announces its list of the top ten political risks looking ahead. In 2010, Japan made the list for the first time, as the result of the DPJ’s electoral victory. There are upsides and downsides to most risks, and regime change is no exception. We wish to take a look at the policy decisions and the politics that drive them up to and beyond the July House of Councilors election and their implications for the long-term future of Japan. Jun Okumura will lead the discussion and dialogue with the audience. You can read the Eurasia Group document Top Risks of 2010, where Japan clocks in at number five, for reference.

About the Speaker

Jun Okumura is a 30-year veteran of the Japanese civil service. During that time, his work has included postings and travel in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and of course Asia, and he has headed a number of Japanese governmental enterprises and agencies such as the International Cooperation Center at the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO); management and regional portfolios at the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund/ Japan Bank for International Cooperation; and as president of JETRO New York, where, in the aftermath of 11 September 2001, he led the Japanese business community's efforts to assist evacuated Japanese businesses and consular institutions. He currently spends much of his time helping Eurasia Group to expand its Japanese coverage as a senior adviser there.
