The Master of Education (M.S.Ed.) degree in TESOL at Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ), is designed for anyone teaching English to native speakers of Japanese or other languages. This graduate program trains you in the practical techniques of teaching English as a second or foreign language and explores the theory behind those techniques. TESOL is the longest-running program at TUJ and has more than 1200 alumni.
What You'll Study
Following an introduction to the study of TESOL, you'll learn about the history of the English language and its sounds and grammar. You'll gain a thorough understanding of second-language acquisition and TESOL methods and materials. On a practical classroom level, you'll learn how to teach second-language listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Doctoral Program
The Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in TESOL has been offered since 1988 at the Tokyo campus and since 1995 in Osaka. To date, nearly a hundred candidates have earned doctoral degrees in English education. The program operates on a "cohort" model, with a group of candidates beginning the program together every three years.
Where You Can Study
You can participate in the TESOL program at TUJ's campuses in Tokyo or Osaka. Your diploma will be issued by the College of Education of Temple University in Philadelphia, a fully accredited and nationally recognized school of education in the United States.
Weekend Seminars
The Distinguished Lecturer Series brings three internationally recognized TESOL scholars to TUJ nine times a year for intensive weekend seminars. The first three hours of each Saturday session are free and open to the public, which is a great opportunity for prospective students to attend the actual TESOL classes.
