Understanding Japanese Society (UJS101)
- Thursday 19:40-21:30
- Tokyo (Maps & Directions)
Have you ever been asked about a certain aspect of Japanese culture or society and found that you could not explain it well? It is not that you don't know your own culture or society for you (if you are Japanese) have lived here all your life; or (if non-Japanese) have lived in Japan for long. It is just hard to detach yourself from what you've become used to and to look at things from a newcomer's point of view. Well, be ready to answer more baffling questions for the number of visitors is increasing as the Tokyo Olympics 2020 draws near.
This course will help you to discuss intelligently many questions often posed by puzzled foreign visitors. It will also be a great opportunity for you to understand the underlying reasons for Japanese-Western socio-psychological differences and similarities. Through small-group discussions and power-point slides, we will discuss important topics such as: mother-child interaction; male-female relationships (including intercultural love affairs and marriages); the psychology of the Japanese language; gift exchange customs; the stress on "persistence" and the importance of non-verbal communication in Japan. Open to anybody interested in understanding Japanese society.
