Introduction to American Law (IAL101)
This course is designed for business people, legal professionals and anyone with a keen interest in American legal culture and in understanding the important role that law and the legal system plays in American life. This is an introductory course that will examine how case law and legislation is developed, as well as discuss some of the differences between U.S. legal traditions and those found in civil law regions such as Japan or Europe. Selected substantive law areas will be addressed, including constitutional law, contracts, torts, products liability, intellectual property law, and procedural law. Relevant areas of public international law will also be briefly discussed.
Johnathan McCaskill holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the track team and studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science as part of UNC’s Honors Program. He also holds a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin and is a US-qualified lawyer with nearly 20 years of experience, including over a decade of international law practice, project management and the design and delivery of professional skills training. He has been involved as a prosecutor or legal advisor in numerous criminal investigations, including financial crimes prosecutions, corruption investigations and war crimes against humanities prosecutions. As a member of several international organizations including the United Nations, the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe and the International Commission on Missing Persons, he has advised political leaders and law enforcement officials on human rights laws, investigation and prosecution tactics, international standards and best practices. Johnathan enjoys martial arts, running, cycling, tennis, playing bass guitar and cooking.
