Basic Counseling Skills (BCS101)
No matter what kind of career path you are in, human interaction is essential and inevitable. However, due to technological advancements in our society, the frequency of face-to-face interaction has dropped drastically. In fact, numerous surveys show that people prefer email as a means of communication when expressing anger, sadness, worry and any forms of rejection, etc...As a result, people are beginning to lose confidence in their ability to troubleshoot when confronted by someone who is emotionally charged. This course will teach you how to "listen" and "connect" with others who are not happy campers. Professional journal articles indicate that a client experiencing "emotional connection" with a counselor is more likely to result in an improvement in quality of his or her life. The magic question is: how can we achieve that? By learning to apply the basic counseling skills in difficult situations, you can help others in a more satisfying way. We will first learn the basics of what it means to counsel others and how to apply counseling skills most effectively. After we learn the theory of counseling, we will role-play different types of basic counseling skills. Students are evaluated on their in-class performance. Business leaders, parents, teachers, community leaders and those who are simply interested in counseling are all welcome to attend this course.
