Medical English: A Practical Course for Health Professionals (8 Weeks) (MEE101)
- Tuesday 19:10-21:30
- Tokyo (Maps & Directions)
As Japan, and the world, becomes more globalized, English has become the common language of medicine. It is therefore crucial for medical professionals working in cosmopolitan areas to have a basic ability to communicate with foreign patients in English in order to diagnose and treat illness. Medical English also plays a crucial role in communication between healthcare professionals from different countries, whether this is in the setting of professional exchange, conferences, presentations, or study-abroad opportunities. This course, designed for doctors, nurses, and co-medicals (including pharmacists, health technicians, and hospital administration personnel), will give students a basic introduction to the proper use of Medical English in the hospital and clinic settings. Through a series of dialogues, scenarios, and interactive learning simulations, students will be able to 1) understand the importance of English communication in the clinical setting, 2) gain the confidence and ability to initiate an interaction with an English-speaking patient during the diagnostic, treatment, and education phases of management and 3) be able to complete a basic medical interview with an English speaking patient.
